NBA Thoughts- 1/3
January 4th 2011 00:17
NBA Rookies of the Month: Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers took home Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors. This should not be a surprise to anyone as Griffin is putting up huge numbers. Griffin averaged 23 points, and 13.5 rebounds per game while averaging the most minutes of all rookies. For the Eastern Conference, Landry Fields of the New York Knicks took home the honors. The combo- guard/forward from Stanford averaged 8.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.23 steals for the improving Knicks team.
Coaches of the Month: Erik Spoelstra and Gregg Popovich win the honors. Spoelstra had a record of 15-1 for Miami during December. As part of the month, Miami went 10-0 on the road, including a key win at Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas day. The Spurs coach took home the honors for the second straight month, guiding San Antonio to a 13-2 record. This included a ten game winning streak. The Spurs are 29-4 on the season, joining the ranks of ten prior teams who have won this many games through 33 contests.
Lakers Dismay: After losing Sunday at home to Memphis, 104-85, their fourth loss in five games, the Los Angeles Lakers are facing in-house drama. This is something they are unaccustomed too, with players voicing their displeasure of one another and Kobe Bryant being called out by coach Phil Jackson. The Lakers are sit in the fourth spot in the West, with a record of 23-11.
Cavaliers Struggles: An loss to Dallas 104-95, Sunday, was Cleveland's 17th in 18 games. Cleveland fell to 8-26 on the season. Antawn Jamison is leading the team in scoring with 15.5 points a game. Next up for Cleveland is a battle with Toronto on Wednesday.
