NBA Preview: Southwest Division
December 20th 2011 17:35
In predicted order of finish.
Dallas: Adding Lamar Odom over Peja Stojackovic was a huge score for the defending NBA champions. Odom's arrival makes Dallas's bench even stronger, pushing Shawn Marion to the bench. Vince Carter arrives as the new starting shooting guard. Dirk Nowitzki returns as the leader for Dallas. Losing Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea hurt, as both of those guys were heroes during the Mavericks championship run. Dallas will once again be vying for the right to play in the NBA finals.
San Antonio: San Antonio and Memphis will duke it out for second place behind Dallas. San Antonio used the amnesty clause on Richard Jefferson, suddenly freeing up some space, they have yet to use. Right now, rookie Kawhi Leonard from San Diego State is the starting small forward. One of the leagues best backcourts will once again rule this team, along with their aging star, Tim Duncan. Manu Ginoboli and Tony Parker arrive with a bad taste in their mouth over losing to Memphis in the playoffs last year as the top seed in the West.
Memphis: Rudy Gay is back, making Memphis even more strong as an opponent. Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley form one of the league's best and youngest starting five's with Gay. Lack of depth on the frontcourt, will hurt as Darrell Arthur is the only backup big man. If Gasol or Randolph go down then doom could come. Also losing Shane Battier to free agency hurts the depth at the small forward spot.
Houston: Luis Scola and Kevin Martin are still Rockets after a three team trade involving Chris Paul fell through. Now the Rockets will use the duo to try and get them back into the playoffs. Kyle Lowry needs to be more consistent as does Chase Budinger if the Rockets want to push for a playoff spot.
New Orleans: The era of change has embarked on the Hornets after dealing Paul. A plethora of talent was brought back in exchange, involving Chris Kaman and Eric Gordon, both solid players. Gordan will lead the team in scoring and Kaman gets to head the defensive effort, teaming with Emeka Okefor. Trevor Ariza and Jarrett Jack both return as players who can score if needed and defend the ball. New Orleans will win if they can shut down teams, they have the players to play spirited defense.
