NBA News: The Playoff Chase
April 12th 2011 02:26
Both Eastern and Western Conferences have their own brand of playoff chase occuring. Here's a glimpse of each:
Eastern Conference
The Bulls are running away with the top seed with 60 wins, against 20 losses. Miami continued their winning ways, and are near clinching the second seed, all they need is one more Boston loss. (Celtics are in a dogfight) Orlando with 51 wins and 30 losses are nine games up on on Atlanta for fourth place. The Hawks slide has the Knicks chomping at the bits, only one and a half games behind now. New York is 42-38, and Atlanta is 44-37, so the Knicks need another two wins, and the Hawks to slide in their finale versus Charlotte. Tall task for the Knicks who face Chicago and Boston in their final two contests. Philadelphia and Indiana round out the top eight teams. The Sixers host Detroit on Wednesday with an opportunity to win 42 games and tie the Knicks should they drop both games to Chicago and Boston.
Western Conference
San Antonio is six games up on the Lakers and Mavericks who are suddenly tied for second place. The Lakers play the Spurs and Sacramento in their final two games. A five-game losing streak this late in the season is not what the Zen Master, (Phil Jackson) wrote up. Dallas has won two straight, and their final two games are against Rockets later tonight and New Orleans. Oklahoma City is sitting right after these two teams, one game back, with an outside shot at jumping both to the second seed. The Thunder face Sacramento and Milwaukee in their final two contests.
Denver is 49-31, sitting in fifth place. The final three spots are up for grabs with Portland, New Orleans and Memphis fighting it out. The Blazers if you want to get crazy about it, can tie Denver for fifth, if they win out, and the Nuggets lose. The Blazers play Memphis and Golden State. The Hornets and Grizzlies are tied with 46 wins apiece. The Hornets after another loss to Utah, are now one-half game behind Memphis. They finish the season out with Dallas. Memphis travels to Portland tomorrow night, and finish the year with the LA Clippers.
There is still quite a bit of action left to be played. Both conferences have teams needing a win to play signify their destiny. Going to be fun to watch.
