NBA Lockout is still on for Friday
June 30th 2011 00:00
We are one day away and a half from the NBA experiencing a lockout similar to the NFL's version. The two sides, players and owners are going to meet tomorrow, hoping to find an agreement to avoid a lockout, the NBA's first since 1998. That season was cut to just 50 games, if we have a lockout here, things may be more dire.
The two sides have met twice each week up until this week when Thursday is the only meeting. Each side is very far apart making a lengthy lockout possible. 22 of the league's 30 teams are losing money, and the owner's want to fix this. Right now, the players are making 57% of the team's revenue. The players say they are okay with this number brought down to 54% but the owner's want it at 40%.
The owner's want a flex cap allowing the team's to only spend $62 million. This would make the league more like the NFL's model and create even more parity. It would keep the league from creating super teams like was made in Miami. The league claims player compensation would never drop below $2 billion as a whole, which is just a small decrease from where it is right now at $2.1 billion.
I hope something does happen, though it is not likely. The NFL is inching closer to an agreement, though part of the season could still be canceled. The NBA canceled summer league play so far, here's to hope none of the season gets the ax.
