NBA Draft: Lottery Pick Analysis
June 24th 2011 01:32
One trade has happened thus far in the draft. Here is the trade breakdown:
Milwaukee gets: 19th pick in this draft, Stephen Jackson, Beno Udrih and Randy Livingston.
Sacramento gets: John Salmons and rights to tenth pick. Jimmer Freddette was taken.
Charlotte gets: Corey Maggette, and rights to seventh pick. Bismack Biyombo was drafted at 7.
1. Cleveland: Kyrie Irving. The Cavs are set at the point guard position for years to come by drafting Irving. Would of been nice seeing him at Duke another year, but Irving is the real deal.
2. Minnesota: Derrick Williams. Minnesota began the day making a bad decision of firing Head Coach Kurt Rambis but ends it on a good note. Williams can score points in bunches, something the Timberwolves need.
3. Utah: Enes Kanter. Utah now has a big man to help Al Jefferson out down low. Kanter didn't get a shot at Kentucky due to benefits he received while in Turkey, but will start immediately for the Jazz.
4. Cleveland: Tristan Thompson. In the end, Cleveland shyed away from Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas and possible buy-out problems, and took Thompson from Texas. Cleveland needed a big man, and got one who needed more time in college. He will be counted on starting right away for the Cavs.
5. Toronto: Valanciunas. Head scratcher here. Toronto didn't need a big man, and Brandon Knight was still on the board. Valanciunas will team up with 2006 top-pick Andrea Bargnani up front. Toronto must have something else up their sleeve here.
6. Washington: Jan Vesely. As expected, the Wizards grab this big man from the Czech Republic. Vesely has the the talent to shoot from anywhere on the court. He wants to be in the slam dunk contest.
7. Charlotte from Sacramento: Biyombo. Another guy who may have buy-out problems. Biyombo is a warrior down low, swatting away shots left and right. Charlotte gets tougher right away.
8. Detroit: Knight. He fell down a few picks, but should fit in very nicely with Detroit. The Pistons have a need for a starting point guard as Will Bynum is best suited for the bench and Rodney Stuckey is a question mark.
9. Charlotte: Kemba Walker. A great pick here for the Bobcats. Charlotte improves their roster in a big way with this draft and adding Maggette who can be a leader off the bench.
10. Sacramento from Milwaukee: Freddette. The Kings got the guy they wanted even after making the trade. Sacramento needed a guard who can score, and Freddette who led the NCAA in scoring last year is this guy.
11. Golden State: Klay Thompson. Golden State took the best player available here, though it is hard to say what they are thinking. Thompson has great talent as a shooter, but Golden State's strength is their backcourt with Monta Ellis and Stephon Curry. Ellis has been rumored to be on the trading block for a few weeks, something must still be in the works.
12. Utah: Alec Burks. The Jazz keep with the trend of selecting guards by taking Burks out of Colorado. Burks will team up with Devin Harris in making a great backcourt for years to come at Utah.
13. Phoenix: Markieef Morris. Two twin brothers from Kansas go with consectutive picks. Phoenix needed a big man and got the bigger of the two twins with Markieef. He is not much of a scorer, instead more of a rebounder and defensive player.
14. Houston: Marcus Morris. The scorer of the two twins, Marcus goes to a team who needs help up front. Luis Scola is already the starting power forward and Marcus can't shoot from the perimeter making him a likely bench player.
First pick not in the lottery: 15th- Kawhi Leonard to Indiana. News of him being traded to San Antonio in exchange for George Hill has just come up. Leonard will be a key backup and possible starter in waiting for the Spurs with Richard Jefferson the incumbent. The Spurs have been wanting to trade Tony Parker, but now it seems they will keep the Frenchman.
