Monday's Conference Finals games
March 7th 2011 03:50
Four games are set to take place Monday with berths to the NCAA tournament on the line. The WCC, MAAC, Southern, and Colonial Conference's will settle their tournaments. Two big upsets happened with Fairfield and George Mason going down. Fairfield is likely headed to the NIT, not to the NCAA tournament, while George Mason is a lock.
The WCC will likely pit Saint Marys and Gonzaga in the final. Both teams are the higher seeds. Saint Marys just defeated Santa Clara, while Gonzaga faces off against San Fransisco later. I will look at this game more in depth tomorrow.
Southern Conference Final has Wofford playing College of Charleston. Wofford knocked off Western Carolina in a minor upset, 86-72. The Terriers of Wofford are 20-12 this year, and 14-4 in conference play. Noah Dahlman leads the Terriers with 20 points per game. He scored 18 in the Terriers win Sunday. College of Charleston outlasted Furman, 63-58 in large part to guard Anthony Guodelock's 31 points and seven rebounds. College of Charleston is 24-9 this year, in large part to Guodelock who is a shoo-in for conference player of the year honors. Guodelock averages 24 points for the Cougars who defeated Wofford both times this year. This game will be a duel between the two stars. Both guys went over 20 points in their two games together.
The MAAC final was tilted off its racer with Fairfield losing to Saint Peters today, 62-48. Saint Peters jumped on Fairfield early on, heading into the locker room ahead 40-15. Now Iona who bead Rider, will take on Saint Peters in tomorrow's game. Iona is 23-10 this year, and Saint Peters is 19-13.
Iona won both games this year versus the Peacocks of Saint Peters by double-digits each time. Iona wins by scoring points, they rank 14th in the country at 79.6 points per game. Scott Machado is the glue of the team, averaging 14 points, four rebounds and eight assists per game. Michael Glover aides with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Saint Peters is led by Wesley Jenkins who scores around 13 points. Iona has the better talent and will show this Monday.
Another upset occurred in the Colonial conference semifinals, as George Mason lost to Virginia Commonwealth, 79-63. Now Old Dominon, the second seed opposes the Cadets from Virginia Commonwealth. The Monarchs from Old Dominion are 26-6 on the season after beating Hofstra, Sunday 77-69.
The season series was split with both teams winning on the road. Old Dominon has won 12 out their last 13 games, since losing to VCU, 59-50 on January, 22nd. One of those 12 wins was against VCU. This game boils down to what Old Dominion team shows up as they have made things harder on them at times then it needs to be. VCU is 23-10 on the year, ending the regular season on a two-game losing streak. One more win and all will be okay for the Cadets. Old Dominion wins and gets the automatic berth. George Mason, bursts one of the larger conference bubble teams berth after their loss today.
