Houston on Friday offered their head coaching job to Kevin McHale and the former Boston Celtic great accepted. McHale is the second new coach hired this week by Western Conference teams. Earlier this week the Los Angeles Lakers hired Mike Brown.
McHale was working as an analyst for TNT this year after being fired by Minnesota as the general manager. McHale has a career coaching record of 39-55 while with Minnesota in two different stints with as coach. He was 19-12 in 2003-04 after letting Flip Saunders go as coach and had a record of 20-43 in 2008. McHale's second chance as the Timberwolves coach was after he fired Randy Wittman.
The former NBA great beat out Boston Celtics assistant coach Lawrence Frank and Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwayne Casey for the job. Houston fired Rick Adelman after the regular season ended. McHale is a member of the top 50 players of all-time in the NBA.
McHale inherits a team looking for a new identity after dealing with numerous injuries from franchise cornerstone Yao Ming who has only played five games since 2008 . The Rockets missed the playoffs due in large part to a slow start on the season which saw the team lose 12 of their first 17 games. Houston finally grabbed a winning record in early March at 33-32 after clobbering Sacramento, 123-101. Kevin Martin and Kyle Lowry led Houston to a 43-39 record, three games away from eighth place Memphis in the West. Good luck to Houston as McHale is not an upgrade over Adelman.
