Lee Roy Selmon dies after suffering stroke

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Lee Roy Selmon died Sunday at the age of 56, two days after he suffered a stroke. Selmon was part of a dominant defensive line at Oklahoma, and at Tampa Bay.
The University of Oklahoma won back-to-back national championships with Selmon anchoring their defensive line. Lee Roy and brother Dewey were named All-Americans in 1975 after leading the team to another title. Lee Roy finished with 40 sacks at Oklahoma, and 194 tackles. He was drafted by the Buccaneers with the first pick of the 1976 NFL Draft. Selmon was the team's first pick ever.
Tampa Bay went winless during their inaugural season. Things quickly changed for the better for the Buccaneers. In his second season in the league, Selmon began to dominant fellow offensive lineman. He piled up 13 sacks and 111 tackles. In 1979, Selmon was named the Defensive player of the year for the league. He accumulated 117 tackles and 11 sacks. Tampa Bay made it to the NFC Championship game before their dream season was ended by the LA Rams in a 9-0 game.
Selmon retired from the league in 1984. He finished with 742 tackles and 78.5 sacks in nine seasons. Selmon made six straight Pro Bowls. In 1995 he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame by his brother Dewey. In latter years, Selmon worked as an athletic director for South Florida and began his own chain of restaurants, which in 2009 was named one of the 10 best sports bars in America.
Selmon suffered a stroke on Friday which left him in critical condition. His condition was improving before the news came out today of his passing. Funeral arrangements will be made at a latter time.
