League of Parity down to four

January 17th 2011 01:26
Now that both top seeds, Atlanta and New England went down to defeat, two six-seeds, Green Bay and New York Jets remain. Two teams who were the second seed in their conference, Chicago and Pittsburgh, host the six seeds.

The old saying, "defense wins championships," is very evident this year. Four of the top defenses in the league are still playing. While New England and Atlanta, two teams with great offenses and above-average defenses are out.

The second, third, fifth and ninth-ranked defenses are still alive to win the championship. Both teams who won the most games during the regular season, Atlanta with 13, and New England with 14 are out right away. New Orleans and Indianapolis, the Super Bowl participants of last season, out in the first week of the playoffs.

New England's defense which has been sub-par for most of the season, was able to hold a weak Jets offense down for most of the game, Sunday. New England quarterback Tom Brady just couldn't get going.

Now two teams with above-average offenses, Chicago and New York will take on two teams with streaking offenses, Pittsburgh and Green Bay. The Steelers have the league's second best defense, behind San Diego, and Green Bay has the third-ranked defense.

What we are left with next Sunday, are four teams with great defenses, and varying degrees of offense ability. One experienced playoffs quarterback in Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger, one who was this close last season in Jets Mark Sanchez, and two who are new to the playoffs, in Chicago's Jay Cutler, and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers.

Low scoring games will be the name of the game next week. The teams who can commit the lowest amount of penalties and turnovers will win. Nobody knows who will win. This is the league of parity. Anyone can win. Thats what makes it so unique from other sports. Parity.

Yeah, the league normalized itself from last year. Now you have to be balanced in order to win in this league.
