Kyrie Irving profile

June 1st 2011 03:12
During the off-days in this NBA Finals series, I will look at individual players who are top prospects for the upcoming NBA Draft. The draft is scheduled for June, 23rd. I will conduct a mock draft in the final days before this date and further analysis of what teams need. First profile is Kyrie Irving, the projected number one pick from Duke.

The guard was born in Australia and moved to the United States at the age of two. His father, Drederick played professional basketball in the country. Kyrie has a dual-citizenship with the two countries and has expressed interest to play for the Australia National Team.

Irving displayed his talents at Montclair Kimberly Academy in New Jersey for two years. He averaged 26.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 3.6 steals while at the Academy as a freshman. He increased the scoring average to 26.7 as a somphomore. Irving transferred to St. Patricks as a junior. While there, the guard continued rampaging through defense's. As a senior, Irving went for 24.6 points and 6.5 assists. The guard was named as the top prospect for ESPN, Scout, and Rivals. He chose Duke over Kentucky as his college of choice.

Before joining the Blue Devil family, Irving played for the Junior National Select Team, Nike Hoop Summit, McDonalds All-Star Game, and Jordan brand Classic. Irving starred for each team, and garnered player of the game honors with Harrison Barnes at the Jordan Classic.

Irving jumped onto the scene as a collegiate. He led Duke in scoring for the first eight games of the previous season at 17.4 points per game. Irving added 5.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals for the team many expected to win it all. Then in the eighth game of the season, Irving suffered a severe ligament injury to his right big toe. This sidelined him until the NCAA tournament. Irving came off the bench for Duke as they eventually lost to Arizona in the sweet sixteen.

This league has gone from big-man dominated to one more guard friendly now. Derrick Rose starred as this season's MVP after being selected by Chicago with the first pick of the 2008 draft. John Wall got selected last year with the top pick by Washington. This year, Irving joins the class after being picked by Cleveland.

Irving is showing himself off as the number one pick by not working out with any other team besides the Cavs, so it's almost certain that he'll be picked at the top. The problem with Irving is that he barely played in college, and he's going to be thrust in as the starter. I wish he was given more time to develop.
