Kings ponder move to Anaheim
February 20th 2011 18:00
Sacramento Kings owners have until March, 1st to apply for relocation. According to reports they are in serious talks for a move to Anaheim.
Team officials were Anaheim this week talking about a possible move. The Kings have spent the last 26 seasons in Sacramento. Joe Maloof, co-owner of the Kings wants the team to move out of the out-dated Arco arena. A new sponsor stepped up for the Arco Arena, a company based out of Anaheim, Power Balance. The deal with the Sacramento franchise is one of the smallest ever due to the age of the Arco Arena. The Kings want a more profitable building, thus the idea of moving on has occurred.
The Maloffs say other cities are also involved in a possible move, but Anaheim has the most to offer. Henry Samueli, owner of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks has offered to loan $100 million to the Maloffs for the fees associated with a move. The Maloffs owe the City of Sacramento millions in previous loans, and other teams in the area could keep the Kings from moving. The Lakers and Clippers, play just 30 miles away from Anaheim. Reloaction in the NBA requires a 15-14 vote from owners, and this could easily be met even with resistance from the LA teams.
Sacramento is 13-40 on the year, right in the thick of the race for last in the Western Conference. They have fallen mightily since the days of Mike Bibby, Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic. Maybe relocating could ignite this sleepy franchise once again.
