Kings fire Paul Westphal
January 6th 2012 03:22
The Sacramento Kings after just seven games on the season, fired their head coach Paul Westphal. The Kings had a 2-5 record thus far on the year, and a 51-120 record over his tenure with the team.
Sacramento will turn to assistant coach Keith Smart who was let go at Golden State after just one season. The Kings have some key ingredients to a successful team in guards Tyreke Evans, Jimmer Freddette and center DeMarcus Cousins. Though Westphal's recent spat with Cousins may have cost him the job.
Last Sunday, Westphal released a statement, asking about Cousins commitment to the team, and saying he wanted a trade. Cousins denied any request was made. Cousins has previously shown how he can be a problem, yet the team hoped for a fresh start this season.
The 61-year old Westphal coached for Seattle and Phoenix, having great success with both teams. He had a record of 191-98 at Phoenix and 76-71 at Seattle.
