Sacramento holds the seventh draft pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Former Connecticut point guard Kemba Walker is the projected choice at this spot as the best player available style takes over. Walker was the best player on the court throughout the NCAA tournament in leading Connecticut to the title. He had one more year of elgibility left, but decided to come out.
Walker played high school basketball at Rice in the Bronx. He had a great four years in the New York area. Walker averaged 18.3 points, and five assists as a senior at Rice. He was named to the McDonald's All-American team after the standout season. Big things were expected of Walker in college at the University of Connecticut.
Head coach Jim Calhoun turns out star guards at an alarming rate with Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, and Caron Butler to name a few. Walker burst upon the scene as a strong backup as a freshman to a team who was named a number one seed at the NCAA tournament. Connecticut went to the final four in 2009 in large part due to Walker's 23 points in the eltite eight game versus Missouri. After a bad season in 2010, Walker took it upon himself to lead the Huskies back. He was amongst the nation's leading scorers at 23.4 points per game. Walker won the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard and was named the MVP of the final four at the NCAA tournament.
Walker is a proven winner. He plays the game with such tenacity, and explosiveness. Many teams including Portland are interested in moving up and selecting the point guard with the seventh pick if he lasts this long. He is a little on the short side, but he makes up for this with heart and determination.
