Kawhi Leonard Player Profile
June 9th 2011 17:41
After the top four picks, things begin to get murky in the 2011 NBA Draft which is viewed as one of the weakest in recent memory. An influx of European players plus a lack of strong talent coming from college basketball due to an impending lockout in the NBA is the cause for this. Toronto has the fifth pick in the draft, and they need help in a big way. Kawhi Leonard from San Diego State can give them this help. This six ft. seven in. forward has a motor that doesn't stop.
Leonard played high school basketball at Martin Luther King in California. He was named 2009 Mr. California after averaging 22.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and three blocks per game. He was ranked as the 56th top prospect going into college basketball. After some deliberation, Leonard settled on San Diego State to play for college basketball mastermind Steve Fisher.
The forward had a great freshman season in leading the Mountain West Conference in rebounding. Leonard had 17 double-doubles on the season. His best outing came versus Cal-State Fullerton in getting 23 points and 18 rebounds. Leonard continued the trend of leading the conference in rebounding for his second season. San Diego State began the season winning their first 19 games before running into conference foe BYU. The Cougars beat San Diego State twice on the season. Leonard was named to the All-American team on the year. He had 33 double-doubles on the season. Leonard averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore.
Leonard was often overshadowed by BYU guard Jimmer Freddette in the Mountain West during his two seasons at San Diego State. But Leonard has a knack of doing everything well on the court. He can play all five positions if needed. Leonard does need to put on more muscle and isn't much of a shooter, those are the things he needs to work on. Toronto would be making a solid choice with him at five.
