J.R. Smith signs with Chinese team
September 15th 2011 00:12
Former Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith signed a one-year deal with a team from Zehjang. Even if the NBA lockout gets lifted, Smith will not be able to come back to the league.
Wilson Chandler, also a former member of the Denver Nuggets, signed with a Chinese team for the whole year. Like Smith, Chandler is gone for the season. He signed with Zhingzang Guangsha, where former NBA assistant coach Jim Cleamons is the head coach.
Former Connecticut forward Josh Boone plays for the same team, Smith will be joining. Last year, he averaged 12 points per game as a sixth-man at Denver.
As the lockout continues to drag on, I expect more players to follow this route and sign away their rights for the season. Chandler and Smith are the first to set the tone, but many more will follow.
The two sides, the NBA players and union met again yesterday. No progress was made, as the sides are divided on the salary cap. No new meetings are set, and the sides declined to meet today.
