J.J. Hickson dealt to Sacramento
July 1st 2011 01:44
A few hours before the NBA lockout was set, two teams worked on a trade which will stregthen both. Sacramento traded Omar Casspi and a future first round pick to Cleveland for J.J. Hickson. The pick is lottery protected next year and then in 2013 can become a lottery choice or a pick in the top 13.
Cleveland with the trade inherits the first Israeli player to ever play in the NBA. Casspi was drafted with the 23rd pick in 2009 by Sacramento. Casspi averaged 9 points and five rebounds per game for the Kings last season. Casspi started 27 out of 71 games he appeared in. The Kings after acquiring John Salmons in a three-team trade on draft night, attempted to ease a log-jam at the position. Four small forwards were on the roster with Fransico Garcia, Casspi, Salmons, and Donte Greene. Cleveland needed a small forward as last season ended Alonzo Gee was the starter at the position.
Sacramento may lose starting center Samuel Dalembert to free agency making Hickson an emergency policy in case. Hickson is not a true center but can play the position if needed. He stands at 6 ft. 9 in. making him undersized as a center, but he has the bulk to take a beating. Hickson averaged 14 points and nine rebounds last year for Cleveland, starting in 66 games. Hickson has a Zach Randolph like body and has the talent to do what Kevin Love did last season, averaging double-doubles. His problem thus far in the NBA has been a lack of consistency. Sacramento has Demarcus Cousins who can also play the center and power forward position making them stronger up front.
I like this trade for both teams. Cleveland improved their team and so did Sacramento. The Cavs also get a first round pick in the deal, as they can add to the new revival in town.
