Jerry Sloan out at Utah
February 11th 2011 02:51
First Jeff Fisher out at Tennessee in the NFL and now Jerry Sloan finished at Utah? Wow. All good things have to end someday, I guess. The longest tenured coach in the NBA, Sloan resigned after 23 seasons with the Jazz. Sloan amassed 1,127 career wins with Utah.
Utah has struggled recently, losing 10 out of 14 games. A loss to Chicago Wednesday night was Sloan's final game with the team. Sloan recently signed a one-year extension, though said he would wait until the end of the year to make a decision.
Sloan during his time at Utah accomplished quite a few feats to admire. The rank of third in wins all-time behind Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens. Nelson has only 114 more wins then Sloan. The former Utah coach along with two others, has 15-plus seasons with a winning record. Pat Riley and Phil Jackson are the two other coaches. Sloan is the only coach in NBA history to accumulate 1,000 wins with one team. He coached the Chicago Bulls from 1979 to 1982, gaining 92 wins.
Sloan played for 11 seasons in the NBA, averaging 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Sloan was nicknamed the "Original Bull", after being selected in the expansion draft by the team.
Sloan's top assistant Phil Johnson also resigned from his post. Another assistant with the team, Tyrone Corbin will take over as head coach. Sloan was only the sixth coach in Utah Jazz history. Next stop for the "Original Bull", NBA Hall of Fame.
