Jaguars release David Garrard
September 7th 2011 01:03
The Jacksonville Jaguars decided to cut David Garrard, four days before the season opener. The Jaguars are slated to face the Tennessee Titans on September, 11th.
The franchise will save $9 million for cutting Garrard. Luke McCown will take over the starting quarterback spot. Rookie Blaine Gabbart out of Missouri, who the Jaguars took with the 10th spot in the NFL Draft, is the backup.
This move was similar to what Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio did back in 2007. He decided to cut then starter Byron Leftwich a few days before the season started. Ever since then, Garrard has been the man. He finishes with a 39-37 record as starter at Jacksonville, and 16,000 yards passing. Garrard threw for 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. He also ran for 17 touchdowns and 1,746 yards.
The Baltimore Ravens have expressed interest for Garrard. It seems like a logical place if he does sign with the Ravens. They are without a decent backup quarterback for starter Joe Flacco. Rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor from Virginia Tech is the current backup.
