How Oregon State can Defeat Stanford
November 24th 2010 00:34
Saturday night's game with Oregon State(5-5) and Stanford(10-1) may look daunting for the Beavers, but their is a chance they can win. Here is what needs to happen:
Jacquizz Rodgers needs the ball: Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz has had a decent year as the new signal caller for the team, but Jacquizz needs the ball. The offensive line performed much better in last weeks game versus USC and this needs to continue to happen.
Blitz Andrew Luck: The Stanford quarterback has torn opposing defenses up this season with his pinpoint passing. Luck has thrown for 2746 yards with 24 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. However the one game he marginally struggled this season was Stanford's only loss. Luck in Stanford's 52-31 loss threw for two interceptions thanks in large part to the defensive schemes Oregon was throwing his way. Oregon State has the personnel to do the same on defense. Defensive tackle Stephen Paea who is projected as a first round draft pick in next year's NFL draft needs to show why.
Use offensive weaponry: Oregon won in large part with their offensive speed over Stanford. Nobody else on the schedule other then Oregon State has the people on offense to a lesser extent who can do what Oregon did. Exploit wide receiver Markus Wheaton's speed will be huge. Wheaton averages 8.3 yards per carry when being handed the ball on fly sweeps and other reverses. Not having James Rodgers around hurts Oregon State in this respect. Jacquizz though can be exploited in little pass plays that opposing defenses struggle with.
Don't pressure kicker Justin Kahut: Keeping Kahut's mood light and happy will keep him from missing easy field goals and extra points. Last week's performance against USC earned him special teams player of the week for the PAC-10. The senior kicker is 6-10 on the season on field goal attempts.
Look for a spirited effort from both teams in this game. Stanford's slim BCS hopes are on the line and Oregon States bowl game lives are at stake. Stanford due to TCU and Boise State's emergence coupled with the weak Big East and ACC are in danger of not making an BCS appearance even if they finish in the top five.
