Friday Tournament games update

March 18th 2011 22:22
After yesterday's games all seemed to come down right to the last moment, today's have been a little more one-sided. Three games did go down to the last minute, but blowouts have showed up as more one-seeded teams are playing.

The upstart George Mason Patriots after trailing for most of the game to Villanova, came back in the final moments to win, 61-57. George Mason was ahead, 7-6 in the early going of the game. Their next lead was at 56-54 with a little over one minute remaining. The Wildcats were in control for the bulk of the game, they just couldn't hold the lead. Mike Morrison and Luke Hancock came up huge in the last minute to hold off Villanova. Hancock scored 18 points, and had five assists to lead George Mason in the win. Corey Fisher scored 20 points in his final game as a Wildcat. George Mason next up has a meeting with top-seed Ohio State who is running away from Texas-San Antonio right now.

I felt Oakland could pull of the shocker of Texas. The Longhorns squashed this feeling for most of the game until the four minute mark when Oakland began trimming down the big lead. Texas was ahead 78-63 with four minutes remaining. At the 1:25 mark in the game, Oakland had the lead down to five points. Though this was too little, and too late as the Golden Grizzlies ran out of gas. Tristan Thompson led the way for Texas, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Keith Benson, rated as an NBA lottery pick by some NBA pundits was held to 15 points and 11 rebounds. Texas moves onto play Arizona, who had to pull a little magic out in defeating Memphis. PAC-10 player of the year, Derrick Williams made a game-saving block with less then a second left off a missed free-throw to perserve Arizona's two-point win.

Now for the blowouts. With three top-seeded teams in action today there was a high chance for more one-sided games. Duke blasted Hampton, 87-45. Ohio State is headed towards a blowout, ahead of Texas-San Antonio by 16 at half. And the surprise of the day, in a 8-seed versus 9-seed matchup, Michigan beat Tennessee, 75-45 in coach Bruce Pearl's likely last game at the helm. Michigan was 0-1 from the charity stripe, didn't matter in the blowout. Now Pearl is probably out at Tennessee after Michigan outscored his team, 39-14 in the second half.

The best chance for an upset in the remaining games tonight is Indiana State over Syracuse. Virginia Commonwealth as an 11th-seed may beat 6th-seed Georgetown. Washington and Georgia, Marquette and Xavier, plus Illinois versus UNLV, are the games to watch for close finishes.
