Friday Bowl Games Previewed

December 30th 2010 01:46
Four more bowl games coming our way Friday. The Meineke Car Care Bowl starts the action off, Sun Bowl, Liberty Bowl and Chick-a fil Bowl continue the action next.

Car Care Bowl: An ACC-Big East battle takes place in Charlotte, to kickstart the action. Clemson (6-6) versus South Florida (7-5), The game will be nearly a home-game for Clemson, whose campus is just a couple hours away.

This year was a struggle for both teams, so making it to a bowl game is something to be happy about. Clemson four of their six losses totaled just 17, points including a 27-24 loss to top-ranked Auburn on Sept. 18. Neither team is known for a good offense this year, as they are winning with defense.

Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker has thrown for 2,079 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year. A two-running back attack with Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington has worked to assist with the lack of passing game. 726 yards for Harper and 686 for Ellington on the ground. Clemson has the ninth-ranked defense in the land with Da'Quan Bowers as the leader. Bowers won the Bronco Naguarski award for top defensive player of the year.

South Florida has a two-running back similar to Clemson, just not as successful. Moise Blancher has carried for 743 yards and Demetris Murray for 509 yards. B.J. Daniels as the quarterback did show signs of being good this year, just not too often. Daniels went for nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions on the year.

With the strong defense, Clemson exhibits, the Tigers will win this game going away. South Florida has not shown the ability to keep up with opponents if they score. Clemson can't score, but they will here with Daniels and co. struggling.

Sun Bowl: In the land of the sun we have the Sun Bowl without a PAC-10 team. Due to a lack of PAC-10 bowl eligible teams, Sun Bowl officials elected to take Miami (7-5) and Notre Dame (7-5) for the game. These two teams had a great rivalry going on in the 80's but haven't faced one another since 1990.

Jeff Stoutland will take over coaching duties just for one game after the Hurricanes dismissed Randy Shannon, and new coach Al Golden will not be available. Jacory Harris is another guy who looks good one game and not so much the next week. He is back as the quarterback for the Hurricanes. Harris has 14 touchdowns on the season. Three solid players complement Harris in running backs Damian Berry, Lamar Miller and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson. Michael Irvin's record of 11 touchdown receptions went down this year to Hankerson who has 12.

Notre Dame comes into the game on a three-game winning streak with victories over USC and Utah in the streak. Freshman Tommy Rees is the quarterback who led the Fighting Irish on the streak. Rees went for ten touchdowns on the year. Michael Floyd is the number one receiver for the Irish with 73 receptions.

Both teams have above-average offenses and solid defenses. This game could go down to the wire. Harris will make a play or two in addition to a few miscues. Miami has the stronger team though and pulls it off.

Liberty Bowl: A battle of freshman quarterbacks takes center stage in Memphis. Central Florida (UCF) is 10-3 on the year, and Georgia just 6-6.

The Conference USA champs get to try and make a name for the conference taking on the SEC. Coach George O'Leary starts freshman Jeff Godrey at the quarterback spot. Godfrey lights up the stats page both as a passer and runner. He has gone for 2,042 yards passing and 546 yards rushing. The attack is not one dimensional as UCF is 25th in the country on the ground. Ronnie Weaver and Latvius Murray have combined for 2,108 yards on the year. The 12th in the country defense backs up the solid offense.

Georgia has the defense to contain the pass, being at 19th in the country, but can they stop the run? Freshman quarterback Aaron Murray threw for 24 touchdowns and six interceptions on the year. Wideout A.J. Green is the main target who has gone for 49 catches and 771 yards this year, despite being suspended for four games to start.

UCF has lost four straight bowl games, while Georgia has won four straight bowl games. Time for this streak to end. UCF wins in a thriller.

Chick-a fil Bowl: The runner-ups for both the ACC and SEC title games face off in this classic bowl game. Florida State (9-4) takes on South Carolina (9-4). The Seminoles lost to Virginia Tech in the ACC title game, and South Carolina fell to Auburn in the SEC title.

South Carolina has a balanced offense with quarterback Stephen Garcia and running back Marcus Lattimore. Garcia threw for 2,819 yards and 20 touchdowns this year. Lattimore placed second to Newton in rushing for the SEC conference. Lattimore rushed for 1,128 yards. Alshon Jeffery is Garcia's main target with 79 catches. The number one rushing defense will also be at coach Steve Spurriers disposal.

Christian Ponder who began the year as an Heisman Trophy canidate was up and down. Ponder has 20 touchdowns this year. Ponder may not go for this game, but I bet he will. Chris Thompson leads the team in rushing with 699 yards.

The Gamecocks have far too much talent on offense to lose here. Florida State has been up and down on both sides of the ball this year. Ponder is probable for the game after having fluid taken from his elbow. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher needs to have Ponder to even have a chance here. South Carolina wins.
