Freaky Friday in the NBA

February 12th 2011 07:01
Two big shockers happened in NBA action Friday night. Cleveland won. Yes, they stopped their 26-game losing streak. And, Philadelphia beat San Antonio. Don't know which outcome comes as the larger shock. One other minor surprise occurred in the final game of the day with Phoenix rallying and spoiling new coach Tyrone Corbin's debut with Utah.

The LA Clippers and guard Baron Davis had the final shot in regulation versus Cleveland. J.J. Hickson's outstretched arm went long enough to swat away a side-arm shot from Davis. Cleveland then with the home-crowd going crazy whipped the Clippers in the overtime, 126-119. Afterwards, the players and fans acted as if they won the NBA Finals. Antawn Jamison led the Cavs with 35 points. Rookie forward Blake Griffin scored 32 points and had 13 rebounds for the Clippers. Point guard Mo Williams returned from injury with a huge game, going for 14 assists. Was looking forward to Washington and Cleveland on Sunday with both teams on losing streaks. The Cavs spoiled this with the win.

The 76ers with a healthy Elton Brand have the potential to be good. San Antonio really struggled with the 76ers and their defense. The Spurs shot only 33% for the game. Point guard Jrue Holliday scored 27 points, while Brand went for 17 rebounds. Tim Duncan had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs who went down for the ninth time this year. Philadelphia improved to 25-28.

Utah played a great first half, jumping to a 56-44 lead at halftime. This soon evaporated as the Suns and guard Steve Nash woke up in the second half. Center Robin Lopez ignited a third quarter run that gave the Suns the lead. Lopez went for 11 points and five rebounds in the quarter. Phoenix outscored Utah 51-27 in the second half, in overtaking the Jazz 95-83. The Suns actually look good now on defense, something new for them.

Two big games on Sunday with Boston and Miami playing and Orlando and the Lakers.

It isn't shocking that Cleveland won. Mo Williams was healthy so the Cavs finally had somebody that can actually pass and give it to Jamison. The Sixers had a nice upset win against the Spurs. That was the more shocking game. The Clippers aren't even that good of a team anyway. No surprise here.

The Cavs were due for a win and everyone knew it was coming sooner or later especially at home against some weaker teams that they are playing right now. That Philly win I do not see being that big of a surprise. Oddmakers made Philly just a 3 point underdog last night. This Philly team can be very good if they just learn to limit their mistakes and believe in Doug Colliins' system. I would have thought that Utah would have taken care of business after Sloan stepping down and wanting to start their new coach off the right way.
