Franchise tag placed on Vick
January 31st 2011 01:26
On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles placed their franchise player tag on quarterback Michael Vick. Making the move now enables Philadelphia the leverage to find a possible suitor for backup quarterback Kevin Kolb.
Vick made $5.25 million dollars in 2010, but with the franchise tag will make $20 million. This is an astronomical raise for a quarterback who wasn't expected to do much after making an return back to football.
Kolb, was supposed to be the starter, though injury caused him to give the job up to Vick, who ran with it. Kolb now is the guy on the outside looking in for Philadelphia. Vick, currently playing in the Pro Bowl, had an monster year. Passing for 3,018 yards, and 21 touchdowns, plus nine touchdowns on the ground, earned him the pay increase. He should an improved passing arm, with an great quarterback rating just over 100. The Eagles were 8-3 in games he started.
Long gone are the Atlanta days when Vick couldn't complete a pass, and was just a great running quarterback. He now has the whole package, and will likely bring an similiar contract to Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, and New England quarterback Tom Brady. The franchise tag gives the Eagles another year to make sure Vick is for real. Then the long term contract and big money comes in. Kolb may never be an starting quarterback in the league. Teams are surely interested in giving him another chance to try. His chance in Philadelphia has run dry.
