Fisher out at Tennessee
January 28th 2011 01:17
Jeff Fisher and the Tennessee Titans have decided to part ways. Fisher has coached at Tennessee for 16 seasons, and all signs pointed to him coming back for an 17th. No reason was made to the public of why the sudden change. Fisher was the longest tenured coach in the NFL.
Fisher went 142-120, during his run at Tennessee. He was 5-6 in the playoffs, and 0-1 in Super Bowls. The Titans game with the Rams in 1999 was one for the ages. The Titans nearly pulled off the victory, falling just short with an 23-16 loss.
Fisher oversaw the teams change from the Oilers to the Titans, Houston to Tennessee, replacing fired coach Jack Pardee in 1994. He was at the time, the youngest coach in NFL at 36 years old.
This off-season at Tennessee was tough, with defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil being fired, and defensive line coach Jim Washburn going to Philadelphia. Cecil and Fisher are close friends, adding insult to the firing.
During the season, Fisher had spats with quarterback Vince Young, who was supposed to be the franchise quarterback. Turning to Kerry Collins near the end of the season, instead of Young, didn't earn Fisher any points with owner Bud Adams. Tennessee went 6-10, on the season, an below average mark for an average team.
Now Tennessee will move on without Fisher. He was a good coach, who may of wore out his welcome. Too bad, as now a different team will likely take on his coaching abilities. First off, he will likely turn to an television analyst gig, before entertaining more coaching jobs. The Titans, now get to figure out what to do with Young, without Fisher at the helm.
