Duke Goes Down
January 13th 2011 04:44
Mens college basketball is now down to four undefeated teams, after top-ranked Duke lost 66-61 to Florida State. The Seminoles continue to be a thorn in the side of the Blue Devils. This is their fourth victory over Duke, while the Blue Devils were perched at number one.
Florida State went into the game on a slide after losing to Auburn and Virginia Tech, as the opener for ACC play. Duke, on the other hand has won 25 straight games, and 14 of these came outside of the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor Court. Yet, the Seminoles were not going to back down.
The game went back and forth for nearly 40 minutes. It wasn't until Florida State guard Michael Snaer hit two free throws with 28 seconds left, that the Seminoles could breathe, with a four-point lead.
Florida State was up by four at halftime, 28-24, after holding the lead most of the first half. A quick start in the second half, pushed the Seminoles to a 40-29 lead. Duke rebounded with seven straight points. After an Nolan Smith three-pointer, Duke cut the lead to 59-58 with 2:28 left. Duke didn't score again until 29 seconds left when Smith hit another three to cut the lead to two points.
Duke only shot 31% for the game, well below what they are accustomed too. The three-point shot, something the Blue Devils excel at making, was not there today. Duke shot 11-35 from behind the line. Florida State was a more respectable 44% from the field. The Seminoles improved to 12-5 on the season, while Duke is now 15-1.
Kitchen was the top scorer for Florida State going for 22, Chris Singletary scored 18. Kitchen added 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Kyle Singler led Duke with 22, and Smith added 19.
Don't expect the Blue Devils to fall out of the top five after this loss. Florida State will gain some votes to land in the top-25 but won't make the poll, just yet.
