Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki reached 23,000 points on Friday night during the Mavs 102-76 win over Milwaukee. Nowitzki became the 23rd player in NBA history to reach this point total. Dallas improved to 7-5 on the year, and Milwaukee fell to 4-7.
Nowitzki only played 22 minutes and scored 11 points in the game, but that was all he and fellow starters needed to play. The Mavericks whipped Milwaukee from start to finish.
The first quarter was relatively even until the end when sixth-man Jason Terry erupted for five quick points, putting the Mavs up by six at 27-21. The second quarter was more of the same as Dallas jumped to a quick 13 point lead at 40-27. The Bucks attempted to hang around, cutting the lead under 10 points but the game was essentially over. The lead was 15 at halftime, and quickly ballooned to 27 points, five minutes into the third quarter. The rout was on, and Mavericks head coach Rick Carisle sensed this, immediately pulling the starters, playing second-stringers instead. Dallas bench players continued the rout, pushing the lead to 99-69 after Yi Jianlan's basket late in the game.
Terry led the Mavericks with 17 points, and Vince Carter added 16 in just 18 minutes. Brandon Jennings led the Bucks with 19 points, backup point guard Shaun Livingston scored 15. The Bucks shot 37% for the game, Dallas connected on 52% of their attempts.
