Derrick Williams Player Profile
June 3rd 2011 23:10
Derrick Williams attended La Miranda High School in California. Williams dominated fellow California high school athletes while at La Miranda. He averaged over 20 points and 10 plus rebounds each season while in high school. Williams is projected to be selected as the second pick and team up with Kevin Love at Minnesota.
Williams elected to be released from his commitment to USC and play for Arizona in college. He was named the PAC-10 Player of the Year after averaging 15.7 points per game for the Wildcats. Big things were expected of the forward for his second season and he didn't disapoint. Arizona advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament mostly because of Williams's play. He led the Wildcats to their sweet 16 victory over Duke and Kyrie Irving who will likely go first in the NBA Draft. Williams averaged 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in his second season. Williams led the country in field goal percantage at .650. He was named PAC-10 player of the year and to numerous All-American Teams.
Williams can play both forward positions and shoot from all over the court. He put on a show for all to see during the NCAA tournament. Now we will see just how this athletic forward fares in the NBA.
If Minnesota does in fact draft Williams they will be faced with some roster changes. Small forward Michael Beasley won't go the bench willingly, forcing a likely trade. Minnesota signed point-guard sensation Ricky Rubio from Spain, and adding Williams will continue a great off-season.
