Colts fire Jim Caldwell
January 18th 2012 05:20
The Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday fired head coach Jim Caldwell after three seasons at the job. Caldwell posted a record of 26-22 while at Indianapolis, but only won two games this last season.
Caldwell had to go at it this season without starting quarterback Peyton Manning, which was a recipe for disaster. The team signed Kerry Collins out of a retirement only to have him go down for the season as well, leaving Matt Painter and Dan Orlovsky as the quarterbacks. As the losses mounted, the team seemed to give up. Talent is evident on both sides of the ball, but without Manning on the field directing things, the offense stunk. The defense keyed by a great defensive line led by Dwight Freeny struggled to shoulder the load.
Caldwell won his first 14 games as head coach and took the Colts to the 2010 Super Bowl, where they lost to New Orleans. During the 2009 season, the Colts had a great shot at winning every game, but Caldwell made a decision to pull starters during a loss to the NY Jets.
Indianapolis fired vice Chairman Bill Polian and son Chris Polian who was the general manager just a couple of weeks ago. The team continued to clean up what was a mess of a season with dismissing Caldwell.
The Colts are expected to take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the top pick in the NFL draft scheduled to take place in mid- April.
