College Basketball Preview
November 6th 2010 01:32
Here I will look at the major divisions in college basketball and break down who will win each.
Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
After surprising few in their run to the National title victory last year, most players return for Duke, who are again a huge favorite this year, not only to win the ACC, but the title. Mike Krzyzewski reloads with freshman Kyrie Irving and transfer Seth Curry after losing do everything senior Jon Scheyer last year. Look for North Carolina to rebound after struggling last year. Freshman Harrison Barnes will see to this and be an All-ACC performer maybe even player of the year.
Big East
The strongest division in college basketball returns again. Maybe nine or even 10 teams can advance to the Big Dance from here. Pittsburgh returns most of the team back from last years 25-9 squad and will rule the roost. Villanova and Syracuse will compete for second place. With West Virginia right behind.
Big 12
An all Kansas battle at the top with the Jayhawks and Kansas State both lobbying for first. Jacob Pullen who burst upon the scene last year for Kansas State returns yearning for a spot in the final four after last years team just fell short. This year, Kansas State is nearly a lock. Kansas will be right behind with freshman Josh Selby if ruled eligible, plays. Baylor, Texas, and Missouri will fight for third and so on.
Big 10
Purdue would be a lock to win here if center Robbie Hummel was healthy even still the Boilermakers will compete. With slasher E'Tuan Moore and Coach Matt Painter back, Purdue will be a third place finisher. Michigan State and Tom Izzo are the favorites to win. Point guard Kalin Lucas is coming back from a ruptured achilles but the Spartans have too much talent elsewhere not to win. Ohio State with a strong recruiting class and four returning starters places second.
Pac 10
Washington and Arizona will battle it out for first place. Washington lost Quincy Pointdexter to the NBA but return Abdul Gaddy, and Isiah Thomas who will lead the Huskies to the top. Arizona counters with a solid club headed by sompomore Derrick Williams. UCLA will return into contention after last years struggles and are a lock for a NCAA tourney bid. Oregon State, USC and Arizona State all will fight for fourth place.
SEC
In basketball, the SEC, is nowhere as good as it is in football but several teams will still find a way to the NCAA tournament. John Calipari lost five players to last years NBA Draft but will return with a whole group of guys, and again be a player in the division. Florida is the class of the league, though with the most guys coming back, including Kenny Boyton who will compete for player of the year. Tennessee if coach Bruce Pearl comes back will be in contention, even without, they are a team to reckon with.
