March 22nd 2011 03:11
New Texas Tech head coach: Billy Gillespie, who was rumored to be a canidate for the Tennessee coaching job is now Texas Tech's head man. Gillespie will take over the Red Raiders who let Pat Knight, Bob's son go after the Big 12 tournament. The new coach agreed to a five-year deal with the Big 12 school which has fallen after enjoying some success with Bob Knight as the coach. Pat Knight's teams were never the same as his father. Gillespie is viewed as a great recruiter, knowing the Texas landscape well after coaching Texas A&M before he went to Kentucky.
Missouri re-signs Anderson: Mike Anderson of Missouri got a new contract and a new deal on Monday. Anderson earned a raise of half-a million after Missouri leading the Tigers to another NCAA tournament berth. The Tigers lost to Cincinnati in the second round of the tournament, finishing the season 23-11 after beginning the year with lots of promise. Missouri went 8-8 in conference play after going 15-3 during non-conference play.
Pearl out: What was just speculation for months became fact on Monday when Tennessee fired Bruce Pearl. The Volunteers made the NCAA tournament six straight years with Pearl as the coach. Tennessee lost 75-45 to Michigan in the second round of this years tournament. Pearl will be paid almost $1 million in settlements from the university. Sanctions from the NCAA are looming over the university due to Pearl's inabilty to tell the truth about recruiting. Tennessee hopes to avoid more sanctions by letting Pearl go. The Volunteers were 145-61 with Pearl as the coach.
Hunter hired as coach: Ron Hunter was hired as the new coach at Georgia State. Hunter is famous for coaching barefoot in hopes of raising awareness for Samaritan's Feet, an organization that aims to put shoes on children who otherwise would not have them. The coach has coached one game each of the last three seasons without shoes. Hunter coached IUPUI for 17 years previously leading the team to the NCAA tournament one time.
Obama Picks: Barack Obama picked 10 of the sweet 16 teams correctly tying him with yours truly. The President lost three games when Purdue, Syracuse, and Notre Dame all lost. Those were games I lost as well. Obama has Kansas winning the NCAA tournament final. No let-up in sight for the Jayhawks who raced past Illinois last night.
