College Basketball News 1/26

January 27th 2011 00:42
Teams close in on deal: Michigan State and North Carolina, are near to a deal which would enable the teams to play on an Air Force carrier, next season. The two teams would play on Veterans Day. Michigan State officials were first to come up with the idea, and now may have a possible suitor in the Tar Heels.

A look at the polls: Not much change at the top, with Ohio State at number one. Pittsburgh at number two, who lost Monday versus Notre Dame, will likely drop out of the top five next week. Two top-ten teams face off today, with BYU and San Diego State. Loser of this game, will fall out of the top-ten. Vanderbilt, Florida State and Florida are new additions to the rankings. Vanderbilt at 19, Florida State at 22, and Florida ranked 24.

Missing Mountaineers: West Virginia will be missing two key players Thursday in a game with fellow ranked team Louisville. Leading scorer Casey Mitchell was suspended indefinitely by head coach Bob Huggins, Monday. The guard scored 13 points and had 14 rebounds, Sunday during West Virginia's 56-46, victory over South Florida. Forward Dan Jennings will also miss the game after walking from the bench for no reason Sunday during the game. The suspensions leave West Virginia with only eight players during the key Big-East game.

Zags-Gaels rivalry renewed: Thursday night brings a big west coast game, between Gonzaga and St. Marys. These two teams are the class of the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga has hit some struggles this season, but will still be highly regarded come NCAA tournament time. St. Marys is ranked 24th with a 17-3 record. Gonzaga sits at 13-7 on the season, a bubble team right now for the big tourney. Beating St. Marys could jump-start a new season.

Purdue forward ahead of pace: Robbie Hummel, picked by many as a preseason Big-Ten player of the year, missed the whole season with an torn anterior-cruciate ligament. The rehabilation is ahead of schedule, for Hummel, who went down last season to injury also. His treatment is about an month ahead of schedule. Good news for Purdue and Hummel who will return next year.

Yeah, I am upset that my favorite team- Pitt- lost to Notre Dame. It was because the Irish had the greatest strategy. They pretty much just sat there and killed time, destroyed the pace of the game, decreased the shots the opponents took, and that's why Pitt couldn't comeback and win it.

I would love to see that game on a carrier. I would watch for sure. Can't wait to watch the Zags and Gaels.
