Cleveland Loses 18th Straight
January 26th 2011 03:52
The Boston Celtics defeated Cleveland Cavaliers, 112-95, sending Cleveland to an heartbreaking 18th straight loss. Cleveland, last season had the best record in the Eastern Conference at 61-21. The main defections, other then the obvious of Lebron going to Miami, are minimal. Losing forward Anderson Varejao to injury, didn't help either. But still, what has happened to this team?
Some broadcasters and magazines picked Cleveland as the eighth best team in the East this season, even without Lebron James. Bringing in a proven head coach in Byron Scott was supposed to lessen the blow of losing their franchise player in the off-season. Instead this has backfired. Losing James and his thirty-points per game average was huge, but nobody expected the team to be this bad. I figured they would be amongst the worst in the East, but not 8-37 overall after 45 games. Since Thanksgiving day Cleveland is 1-27.
Cleveland knocked off Boston on opening night, 95-87. This team now doesn't resemble that opening night squad. They look listless, and without any emotion. Their body language resembles a team who knows a loss is coming, so why play?
The closest loss of the streak was against Minnesota, December 26, 98-97. The worst loss, without question came to Los Angeles, 112-57, January 11th.
Antawn Jamison leads the team in scoring with 17 points per game. He has only started half of the games, for some reason. Guards Daniel Gibson, and Mo Williams are still around, though both have struggled with injuries throughout the season. Forward J.J. Hickson is the most consistent Cavalier, averaging nearly a double-double, with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Cleveland won't set a record for most losses in a season, there are still 37 games on their schedule. Getting in the double-digits for wins won't be that hard to do. With the All-Star break coming up, Scott and staff will have to look at this roster again, and make changes. Maybe getting ten more wins can be possible. This current losing streak may reach 21 games, before a win with Denver, Orlando and Miami looming on the schedule. A game with Indiana on February 2nd, is Cleveland's best chance at breaking the streak.
