Civil War Preview

December 1st 2010 00:42
This weekend, Saturday to be exact is the game of the year for us Oregonians. The game features Oregon and Oregon State. The Beavers host the game this season, and have an 5-6 record, while Oregon in contrast is 11-0 and 2nd in the country. The National title game in Glendale, Arizona is on the line for Oregon, while an bowl game is up for grabs for the Beavers.

Oregon loves to score the ball, and use their quickness and speed on offense to do so. Darren Thomas, and LaMichael James may get the spotlight but Oregon has other cogs who perform. Kenyon Barber, Remane Alston, and Josh Huff all have multiple touchdowns on the ground. When Thomas decides to pass the ball, his favorite receiver is senior Jeff Maehl who leads the team with 61 receptions.

The Beaver defense has struggled this season mightily with teams who can throw the ball. This is strongly evident by the early season losses to TCU and Boise State and last weeks loss to Stanford. Cardnial quarterback Andrew Luck threw for touchown passes of 62, 52, 42 and 29 yards in the 38-0 win. The Beavers can stop the run with a strong defensive front led by senior defensive tackle Stephen Paea. The senior has totaled five sacks, 14 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles on the season.

Jacquizz Rodgers is the most valuable player for Oregon State on offense. Ever since his older brother James went down to season ending injury, his role as the go-to guy has jumped. Quizz just passed the thousand yard mark on the ground and has 14 touchdowns. Ryan Katz has had a very up and down first season as the starting quarterback. In games versus Cal and USC, he has looked great, but others like against Stanford, the opposite has proven true. Katz has 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year.

Somphmore Cliff Harris leads the Oregon defense onto the field. He has five interceptions on the year, two of which he took back for touchdowns. The defense is solid for the most part but is susceptible to letting running backs pound them. Cal did just this with Shane Vereen carrying the ball for 112 yards. Cal was able to keep the game close by using a slow down approach. Casey Matthews leads the Ducks with 68 tackles for the year.

Saturday at 12:30 on ABC these two rivals will face off. ESPN Gameday will be present all day in Corvallis for the first time ever.

I have the favorite in this one. I love Darron Thomas a lot, and he plays at his best when it matters most. This game is truly meaningful. Chip Kelly and Darron Thomas pull it out in the end. Of course, Oregon St. won't go without a fight either.
