Central Division Teams Needs in NBA Draft

June 18th 2011 22:11
Cleveland: The home of the Mavaliers as they were known during the NBA Finals, now can continue improving with the draft. Cleveland holds the top pick and the fourth choice. Kyrie Irving is expected to go number one though Cleveland states they are still exploring a number of different avenues to go with the pick. Cleveland can go a number of ways as they hold the fourth pick, and point guard Brandon Knight could be available there. Utah has the third choice and may draft Knight. Cleveland likely drafts Irving and Enes Kanter with the fourth pick, making the duo cornerstones of their franchise, immediately improving the team. Cleveland also holds the 32nd pick and 54th in the draft, they can package the picks and make a deal for a veteran adding more fire to the team. If the Cavs hold onto the second round picks they may add European players or even grab JaJuan Johnson if he lasts with the 32nd selection.

Detroit: The Pistons have the eight pick in the draft and 33rd. Detroit can use help at a number of positions, including both guards and small forward as their stars are aging. Austin Daye could eventually supplant Tayshaun Prince at the small forward spot, and Ben Gordon should take over the shooting guard position from Rip Hamilton. Detroit could draft power forward Marcus Morris with the eighth pick or Kemba Walker if he slides a little. Detroit's point guard situation is very shaky with Will Bynum as the current starter and Rodney Stuckey on the outside looking in. Maybe adding fellow former Connecticut Husky Walker to the backcourt could give Gordon new life as a pro. The Pistons with the 33rd pick will likely select a big man or guard, whichever they don't get with their eighth pick.

Milwaukee: Holding the tenth and 40th pick in the draft, Milwaukee has definite needs. Brandon Jennings struggled after his first season with the team, last year. Injuries to Andrew Bogut and other teammates hurt this team which was a playoff threat a season ago. Luc Richard Mbah Moute and Carlos Delfino are decent basketball players, though both are better suited to come off the bench then start. Look for the Bucks to add depth at the power forward spot, maybe forcing Mbah Moute to the bench. Someone like Morris if he slides or Tristan Thompson could be available. Then in the second round Milwaukee could grab Jon Leur or Jordan Williams from Maryland.

Indiana: The Pacers are expected to sign interim coach Frank Vogel to become their regular coach. He led the Pacers to the playoffs, and they threw a scare Chicago's way in the first round before bowing out. Indiana holds the 15th and 42nd picks in the draft. Indiana's franchise cornerstones are small forward Danny Granger and point guard Darren Collison. Roy Hibbert had a great season last year. Indiana needs a shooter, and another big body to bang down low with Hibbert. Adding someone like Marshon Brooks from Providence who averaged 24.5 points per game as a senior or Jimmer Freddette who led the country in scoring if he slides is a great possibility with the team's first pick. Then look for Indiana to grab a big guy in the second round, maybe find a gem there to assist Hibbert and push Tyler Hansborough for playing time. Someone like Keith Benson or Rick Jackson would help.

Chicago: Chicago holds the 28th, 30th and 43rd picks in the NBA Draft. The team who won the most games in the league last year, were defeated very easily by Miami in the Eastern Conference finals. Chicago is very talented on the defensive side, and with league MVP Derrick Rose have someone to build around. Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, and Taj Gibson make up a strong core for the Bulls, throw in Carlos Boozer and you have a good team. Chicago needs a better shooting guard. Keith Bogans is not starter material. Maybe packaging the picks to get a better shooting guard is an option. If not look for the Bulls to add depth at key positions. Shelvin Mack, Kyle Singler, Chandler Parsons are guys who should be available when the Bulls make the 28th pick. Though fellow Eastern Conference foe Boston could nab Mack with their selection. Then Chicago with the 43rd pick should add someone to back up Deng. Small forward Jimmy Williams from Marquette would be a nice pick.
Marshon Brooks is the type of player Indiana needs to add more firepower to their lineup
