Carmelo headed to New York
February 22nd 2011 04:39
Finally a deal is done. It only took most of the summer and the whole season thus far, but the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks agreed upon something. Here's the trade, involving the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Denver gets:
Forward/center Wilson Chandler
Point guard: Raymond Felton
Forward: Danilo Gallinari
Center: Timofey Mozgov
2014 first round pick
Possible additional picks, and cash.
Minnesota gets:
Center: Anthony Randolph
Center: Eddy Curry
New York gets
Forward: Carmelo Anthony
Point guard: Chauncey Billups
Forward: Sheldon Williams
Guard: Anthony Carter
Guard: Renaldo Balkman
Forward: Corey Brewer from Minnesota for Randolph and Curry.
On paper, New York, not Denver gets the better of this deal. Anthony, Billups if he stays, and Brewer will make New York better. Billups has stated if he got traded would request a buy-out and to return as a Nugget. Denver now will go younger with Felton and Chandler leading the way. Gallinari has a similiar game to Anthony, as an over-sized, lanky forward. Mozgov has the talent to be a good center in the league if given a chance . Minnesota needed something to go with Kevin Love. Curry, if motivated enough will help the Timberwolves out. Randolph isn't too bad either. Nice to get this trade out of the way, now more deals can take place. None will be this extraordinary however.

Think about it everyone, New York gets a guy that does not play defense like the rest of their team and is expected to just run and gun games hoping to pull out a victory.
The Top teams in this league play defense. Look at teams that are going to contend for a championship this season. Boston, Lakers, Spurs, Miami, Orlando, Chicago all are in the top 10 in defense efficiency and even teams that are going to get in like the Pacers, Sixers, Dallas and Atlanta are in the top 15.
Yes Melo will bring even more fans to MSG and Nw Tork will market him and Amare to make a ton of money but to bring a Championship you need to play defense.
Me personally I do not like this trade. New York should have waited another year to go after either Chris Paul, Derron Williams or Dwight Howard who are guys that play defense and can help you on that end of the ball. I know there is alot of talk about one of those guys still possibly coming to NY but what does that do when the rest of the team won't play defense.
