Brandon Roy set for surgery
January 14th 2011 00:48
Injury has been a thorn at the side of the Portland Trailblazers, not as much this season as last, but still prevalant. Three-time all star Brandon Roy who has missed 16 games so far this season, will be proactive about fixing the problem. He will have surgery on both knees, next week. No timetable is set for his return.
Roy is averaging 16.6 points in 23 games this season, well below his career averages. Brandon was named 2007 Rookie of the year, and is averaging 19.9 points for his career.
Last season, Roy had an surgery on his meniscus, right before the playoffs, and surprisingly came back during a series with Phoenix. This may of hurt him more then helped. At the time you could tell he wanted to play, but may have been more of a liability to the team then a plus. Portland lost in six to the Suns.
This season, Portland is missing Roy in a big way. Adapting to life without him has been difficult. The team is 19-19 on the season, one that began with great promise. Now with season ending injuries to Greg Oden, and possibly Roy, the team is limping towards the final forty-four games of the season. Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge has had to step up and be the go-to guy. He has done just that, upping his numbers to 20.4 scoring per game, from his career 16.6 average. With aging stars Marcus Camby, and Andre Miller complementing Aldridge the Blazers seem to be a playoff team, likely as an higher seed. Hopefully this surgery works for Roy and he can become the star he once was.
