Brandon Knight Player Profile
June 8th 2011 01:00
I have seen mock drafts with Brandon Knight going to Utah and others with him being taken by Cleveland. For this to happen, the Cavs will have to take Derrick Williams with the top pick, as Irving and Knight are similar players and play the same position. Here is a closer look at the point-guard from Kentucky who came out after just one season under John Calipari.
Knight played high school basketball in Pine Crest, Florida. He has good size as a point guard at 6ft. 3 in. Knight was named the Gatorade National Boys Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010. Knight joined Greg Oden and Lebron James as the only two prior players who received this honor twice. Knight averaged 32 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals as a junior. His senior season was cut short after injuring his groin, though he still played in the Nike Hoop Summitt and McDonalds All-American Game.
The guard was rated amongst the top recruits even after a shortened senior season by all scouting services. He considered Kanas, Kentucky, and Connecticut, but in the end went with the Wildcats. Coach Calipari has a proven record with point guards and Knight decided to go with this. Knight made quite an impression in his first college game with the Wildcats, going for 31 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. The game was an exhibition game versus Windsor Lacers from Canada. Knight averaged 18.3 points for the season at Kentucky. The guard was named as a finalist for the Bob Cousy award. He played a key part in the Wildcats run to the final four of the NCAA tournament.
Both Irving and Knight have a ways to grow as players. Cleveland would be smart to grab Williams and then take Knight. If the Cavs paired the two together things would be looking up. It is hard to say which guard will become the better professional player, Knight or Irving.
