Boise State's bubble is burst
November 27th 2010 20:20
Those who stayed up late on Black Friday were treated to intrigue, heartbreak, and happiness. Nevada , seemingly dead in the water somehow came back to tie up the game with undefeated Boise State and then defeat them. At halftime, the scoreboard read 24-7, in favor of the visitors and winners of 28 straight games, Boise State.
Within a few minutes in the third quarter, Nevada had the lead down to ten. Then early in the fourth, Nevada running back Rishard Matthews took a handoff from senior quarterback Colin Kaepernick, 44 yards for another touchdown. Following another punt, Nevada was able to tie the game up with a field goal.
Then without warning, the Broncos scored on a 79 yard screen pass to Doug Martin. Nevada didn't worry and went the length of the field, finding the endzone with less then ten seconds on the clock and tying the game. The Broncos with their Heisman candiate Kellen Moore had a little more fight even before the time ran out with a long pass play to wide receiver Titus Young. Senior placekicker Kyle Brotzman, 14-17 during the season on kicks, trotted out to the field to attempt an 26 yard field goal. Everything was perfect, except for the kick which drifted left and brought on overtime.
After the Bronco offense stalled yet again, coach Chris Petersen brought his kicker back out for another attempt, this time 27 yards. Only this kick was worse then the previous try and sailed away from the upright. Nevada only needed a field goal and the program defining win was theirs. After the Bronco defense stiffened and stopped Nevada, redshirt freshman kicker Anthony Martinez walked out. Without being stopped from an Petersen and Boise State timeout, Martinez booted an 34-yard field goal directly through the uprights.
Now all the talk about if Boise State belonged in the nation's elite will end for this season as Nevada proved they don't. Nevada finished the season 11-1 and won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) while the Broncos have one more game to play, next week versus Utah State.
