In a battle of unbeaten teams on Thursday night, the Portland Traiblazers came out victorious over Denver, 111-102. Guard Wesley Matthews led the way for Portland with 25 points.
Portland closed a three-game home-stand to start the season with a perfect record, while handing Denver their first loss of the season. The Blazers jumped out to an early 30-17 lead after the first quarter. Denver led by strong guard play from Ty Lawson, and Aaron Affalo battled back to a tie at halftime, 53-53.
The Blazers despite committing 25 turnovers for the game, went back in charge right away in the second half, and it seemed Denver was playing catch-up the rest of the way. After the teams were knotted again at 63, the Blazers went on a 8-0 run to pull ahead at 71-63 midway through the third quarter. Denver fought back, and even grabbed the lead again midway in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer from former Blazer, Andre Miller at 93-90. New Blazer, Jamal Crawford quickly erased that, tying the game up again. Then another new Blazer, Raymond Felton put the game away for good with a three-pointer putting Portland ahead by seven at 107-100.
Lawson led the Nuggets with 25 points, Affalo added 19. The Blazers trio of Crawford, Felton and Matthews combined for 70 of Portland's 111 points. Former Blazers, Miller and Rudy Fernandez combined for 20 points. Denver plays next at the LA Lakers on Saturday, and Portland travels to take on the LA Clippers on Sunday.
