Blazers fire General Manager Rich Cho
May 24th 2011 00:09
Portland on Monday decided to fire general manager Rich Cho who was only on the job for less then one year. The Blazers cited chemistry issues as the reason why Cho was fired. Chad Buchanan will move from his director of college scouting post to assume duties of the general manager until a new one is found. Sound familar? We went through the same story last year with the Trailblazers after they fired Kevin Pritchard only to find Cho after Buchanan was the acting general manager.
Cho came to Portland after serving as the assistant general manager at Oklahoma City for nine years. He made one blockbuster deal while with the team, bringing in Gerald Wallace in exchange for Sean Marks, Joel Pryzbilla, Dante Cunningham and a couple of first round picks. The deal was one which brought the Blazers to the forefront of playoff discussion, including many predicting them to pull off a first-round upset of Dallas. Cho did a good job with the team, so it is hard for me to understand the Blazers reasoning behind this dismassal. It was hard to understand why they fired Pritchard as well. Both guys did quality jobs as general managers with the team.
Portland says it was a "chemistry issue" with Cho bringing the dismassal. This sounds like a cloud of smoke as Cho must of done something which drew the ire of team owner Paul Allen. Pritchard learned first hand you don't anger the NBA's version of Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner. Allen may not be that bad, yet but he is heading down this direction.
Whoever Portland hires to fill the post better know right away not to anger Allen or they will once again find themselves out of a job. Here's to hope this doesn't become a recurring problem with the team.
