Big Sky Conference final preview
March 9th 2011 05:38
Northern Colorado after a late win over Northern Arizona, earned a spot in the conference final. They will take on last season's champ, Montana who defeated Weber State. Both teams split their season series this year, with each winning at home.
Montana is led by center Brian Qvale and Will Cherry who guides the club. Qvale averages 15 points and eight boards, while Cherry goes for 14 points, four assists and four rebounds. Qvale scored 22 points in the Grizzlies victory over Northern Colorado this year, in the loss he got six points. He needs to have a huge game for the Grizzlies. Montana is 21-9 on the year, they finished second in the conference.
Northern Colorado is 20-10 on the year after just outlasting the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona, 73-70. Drew Beitzel leads the Bears with 21 points. He averaged 24 points in the two meetings with the Grizzlies. Beitzel has been on a tear the last eight games, seven of them Bears wins, averaging 24 points. The lone loss came February, 12th versus Montana. Beitzel scored 22 of the Bears 42 points in the loss. Drew Klingman aides in the Bears quest to win with ten points and four rebounds.
If you are looking for a game with two very evenly matched teams, look no further. Montana and Northern Colorado, have nearly the same type of team. One solid guard leading the way for both sides. Montana has a great big-man in Qvale. The Bears have a serviceable forward in Klingman, but nobody who really matches up with Qvale. Taylor Montgomery is the Bears starting center, and he is four inches shorter then Qvale. It just depends what Qvale will show up. Hard to go against Beitzel and the Bears. Northern Colorado with the win if Qvale doesn't go over ten points, if he does, Montana wins , hopefully the game with the Lumberjacks didn't take too much out of them.
