Big Games this weekend in college basketball

February 18th 2011 00:08
Ohio State at Purdue: The Buckeyes at 25-1, are looking to continue their earlier mastery of Purdue. Ohio State defeated the Boilermakers 89-64, about a month ago. Purdue coming off a big win over Wisconsin needs another win here to keep pace in the Big-10. The Boilermakers are 21-5 on the year. This game comes down to the center matchup of Jared Sullinger and JaJuan Johnson. The elder Johnson was thrown around in the teams earlier game, don't look for this to happen again. Will be difficult for the Buckeyes to leave victorious.

Washington at Arizona: Both teams play Thursday with Arizona hosting Washington State and Washington traveling to Arizona State. Washington won the team's earlier meeting January 20th, 85-68. Both teams were ranked at that time. Arizona is now ranked-13th, while the Huskies are on the outside looking-in. Arizona forward Derrick Williams scored 22 points for the Wildcats in the loss to Washington. Arizona doesn't have the guys to keep up with the kind of scoring Washington was producing. They still don't. Look for the Wildcats to try and slow the game

Oregon State at Oregon: Being an Oregonian, I had to look at this game. Neither team is doing much, though Oregon is beginning to come around. While Barack Obama's brother-in-law Craig Robinson and Oregon State are struggling, this year. Oregon is 13-12 after defeating USC for the second time this year. Oregon State has lost nine out of 11 games, and is 9-15. Guard Jared Cunningham leads the Beavers with 14 points per game. He was held to nine points during the Ducks 63-59 victory in Corvallis, January 22nd. The Ducks win with two good big-men being the go-to guys. Joevan Catron and E.J. Singler. Catron averages 17 points and eight rebounds, while Singler scores 11 and gets six rebounds. The Ducks will continue Oregon States disapointing season with the victory.

Vermont at College of Charleston: A big bracketbuster game with two teams leading their respective divisions. Vermont at 22-5 is in first place of the American South, while College of Charleston is 19-7, and first in the Southern Conference. College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins team faced three ACC teams this year. They lost all three but gave North Carolina, Maryland, and Clemson a big scare. A victory over Tennessee rates as the big win for the Cougars. Guard Anthony Guodelock paces the Cougars with 23 points and 5 assists per game. Vermont lost to Connecticut and BYU this year. The Catamounts have a good inside-outside tandem of Evan Fjeld and Joey Accaoui. Fjeld averages 15 points and six rebounds, while Accaoui scores 12 points. Forward Brian Voelkel leads the team with five assists. Accaoui will have his hands full with Guodelock, here. Look for the Cougars to have little trouble in winning the game.

Pittsburgh at St. Johns: The game of the week for the Big East, with the Pitt Panthers traveling to the Big Apple. Pittsburgh received some votes for the top-spot in the country last week, after this week look for more. Sitting at 24-2, and on-top of the Big East earns accolades. St. Johns is much improved this season with new head coach Steve Lavin, as evidenced by a 16-9 record which includes eight big east wins. Victories over Duke, Connecticut, Notre Dame, and Georgetown are all noteworthy victories. Guard Dwight Hardy leads the way for the Red Storm, averaging 17 points. He will have to play like he did versus Duke for St. Johns to have a chance. Pitt is far too deep at all positions for the young Red Storm.

Every Big East game between good teams is a must-see. The conference is so stacked, and there are upsets everywhere. I hope my favorite team, Pitt, pulls it out. They have been the second best team in the country behind Ohio State. Pitt is 11-1 in the Big East. They are the only team in the conference where there isn't somebody exactly one game back- or tied. Pitt has dominated, and they are an incredible team. What makes them more fascinating is that they are winning without their best player, Ashton Gibbs.

There are some outstandng games lined up this weekend with a few teams really needing to make a statement.

Texas at Nebraska should be a good one.

C FL at UAB UAB needs to rebound from that loss at Memphis the other night.

Missouri State at Valpo. Both teams on the bubble.

UNLV at Colorado State..Both are looking for a big win to make that push in.

George Mason at N. Iowa...These two teams should make it in but this game could tell alot aout these two teams.

Really looking forward to that Pitt and St Johns gme. St Johns has stepped it up all year aginst the best teams in College Basketball should be interested to see if they can do it against a very good Pitt team.
