Big college basketball games this weekend

February 25th 2011 00:42
BYU at San Diego State: The heavily anticipated rematch pitting two top-seven teams. BYU won the earlier meeting, 71-58 handing San Diego State their only loss this year. BYU is 25-2, t
Gets a chance for revenge
hough they remain three spots higher then the Aztecs who are ranked fourth. Now San Diego State gets their chance to avenge this loss. The Aztecs keep winning, by the slimmest of margins. But a win is a win and 27 wins is something to brag about. Only one guy made the trip to Provo earlier this year, Kawhi Leonard. The forward scored 22 points for the Aztecs in the loss. BYU guard Jimmer Freddette was unstoppable in scoring 43 points. Someone for the Aztecs need to shut him down. Can they? That is the question, nobody has stopped the gunslinger yet this year, and he really came to play versus the Aztecs. Going to be hard for San Diego State to escape with a win.

Syracuse at Georgetown: Both teams are in the top-20 yet again. This game brings back memories of the great Alonzo Mourning and Derrick Coleman battles down-low. Those two went toe-to toe back in the early 90's. Now its time for Austin Freeman from Georgetown and Kris Joseph at Syracuse to star. The Orangemen after losing six out of eight, seem to be on the right track again winning three straight, including Monday nights win over Villanova. Both teams are knotted up at 10-6 in the Big East adding intrigue to this game. Georgetown is coming off a tough loss to Cincinnati, 58-46 on Tuesday and are 21-7 on the year. Austin Freeman leads the way, averaging 18 points-per game. The Hoyas defeated the Orangemen, February ninth, 64-56. This game was very close until the final four minutes when Freeman and co. took over. Look for a repeat performance as Georgetown grabs a big win.

Wichita State at Missouri State: The game of the year for the Missouri Valley conference. Wichita State and Missouri State are at a tie upon the top of the conference standings at 14-3. Wichita State has one more win then Missouri State with 23. The Shockers from Wichita State win with a balanced effort. Nobody really jumps out at you on the roster. They just play great together. J.T. Durley leads the way averaging 11 points per game and five rebounds per game. Missouri State forward Kyle Weems leads the Bears with 17-points and seven-rebounds. Missouri State outlasted Wichita State in the teams earlier meeting 59-56. Wichita State trailed my double-digits most of the game, only to rebound in the waning moments and eventually lose. The Shockers will be ready this time for Missouri State after continually winning close games. Look for another close game between two very evenly matched squads. The home-court advantage does not pay dividends between these two.

Arizona at UCLA: With Washington taking a step back, this is the battle for the PAC-10 crown. UCLA at 10-4 in conference play, is one victory away from 20. They host Arizona State on Thursday night. The Bruins are second in the conference standings to the Wildcats from Arizona. UCLA has won 10 out of 12 en route to the top of the conference. Arizona knocked off Washington last week, now face another tough test after traveling to USC on Thursday night. Arizona won the teams earlier meeting with UCLA, 85-74. The Bruins are led by Reeves Nelson who averages 14-points and seven-boards per game. Guard Malcom Lee chips in with 14 points. Arizona has the front-runner for player-of-the-year Derrick Williams on their side. Williams scored 22 points in the Wildcats victory over the Bruins. Nelson topped all scorers with 24. More of the same will transpire on Saturday, a duel between the two forwards. Look for Nelson and the Bruins to get the advantage this time around.

Missouri at Kansas State: Has the Wildcats from Kansas State recovered from their slump earlier on this year? Three straight wins over Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska may suggest so. Kansas State is now 19-8 and 7-6 in Big-12 play. The team has struggled without Denis Clemente who graduated last season. Without a good guard to complement Jacob Pullen, the Wildcats struggle to get going. The huge win over Kansas, and avoiding a let-down versus Oklahoma is good news for this team predicted to be a final-four contender. Pullen is averaging 19 points per game for the Wildcats. Missouri won the teams earlier meeting, 75-59 in a game they dominated. Missouri wins with scoring points and are currently on a four-game winning streak. Marcus Denmon leads the way for the Tigers, averaging 17-points per game. He scored 14 in the teams victory over the Wildcats. Both teams need the win here in a big way. I see the Wildcats winning and Pullen having a career night.
