In 1891, Dr. James Naismith was looking for something for his students to do during the winter while at a Christian school. After careful consideration he came up with basketball. Only at first the baskets were peach baskets and the ball was heavy which kept the scores low. Now over 100 years later, the game has changed in many different ways.
Naismith's first set of rules were wrote December 21, 1891. The original artifact went up for sale Friday and was sold for $4.3 million dollars. The proceeds will go to the Naismith Foundation who promotes good sportsmanship and provides services to kids all over the world.
Naismith coached at the University of Kansas for nine seasons before taking over other responsibilities.
Basketball was made an Olympic Sport in 1936. The NBA was created ten years later as the professional outlet for the sport here in the United States.
David and Suzanne Buss, where he is an alumunus purchased the rules. He hopes to bring them back to Kansas.
