Atlantic Division Teams Needs: NBA Draft
June 16th 2011 23:07
Toronto: The Raptors have the first pick of the teams in the Atlantic with the fifth choice. Toronto needs just about everything. Andrea Bargnani and Demar Derozan are the teams best players along with Jose Calderon who averaged nine assists with this team. Adding someone like Kwahii Leonard with the pick would help Toronto out. Leonard has the potential to be a special NBA player. Meshing him and the athletic Derozan together could improve Toronto's fortunes somewhat.
New Jersey: The Nets don't have a first round pick as per the Deron Williams trade. It was a great trade for the New Jersey adding a franchise player in exchange for a question mark in this years draft. New Jersey does have a pick in the second round at 36. New Jersey had a record of 24-58 this past season. They do have some bright spots to go with Williams. Brook Lopez at the center position and Kris Humphries at the power forward spot. Adding a solid wing player like David Lighty from Ohio State, Travis Leslie from Georgia or even Kyle Singler from Duke is possible.
Philadelphia: After a record of 41-41 on the season, Philadelphia earned the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. They stole one game from Miami in the playoffs, and now it's back to the drawing board. Philadelphia has been looking to move starting small forward Andre Iguodala in exchange for Golden State's Monta Ellis. The trade has been on the table for over a week. Depending upon what happens there, Philadelphia should look for added depth at the power forward or center spot. Maybe a shooter to assist Jrue Holliday in the backcourt. Klay Thompson from Washington State or Markieef Morris from Kansas are options at 16.
New York: Adding Carmelo Anthony to New York added to the Knicks dismay. After getting swept by Boston in the first round of the playoffs, New York now can try and improve. The Knicks hold the 17th pick in the draft. New York needs a new center. Ronny Turiaf is a decent backup but he is no starting center. Also new guards are in order, Landry Fields another good backup and Toney Douglas has shown flashes of being good, but can he be a starter? Chauncey Billups is a question mark for the upcoming season as he is getting older. New York can add Chris Singleton with the pick or even someone like Bismack Biyombo at the center position. Biyombo at 6 ft. 9 in. has a 7-7 wingspan. He would add instant defense to a team that needs help.
Boston: The Celtics were expected to contend for the NBA title, instead they floundered in the second round after eliminating New York. Boston holds the 25th and 55th pick in the NBA Draft. If Boston stands pat with this choice nothing good will come out of it. The Celtics need to move up or do some trades on the side to improve their troubles. Trading off Kendrick Perkins hurt the Celtics, now a center is needed as Jermaine O'Neal is aging quickly and Shaquille O'Neal retired. This draft doesn't have a good center available making things tough for Boston. Look for them to select Nolan Smith if he slides to the 25th spot or maybe Shelvin Mack to add depth to the aging Ray Allen.
