Mike Anderson has left Missouri to become the new head coach at Arkansas. He built Missouri back up to promience, and now will get to do the same at Arkansas. John Pelphrey was fired after four years as the Arkansas coach and a record of 59-69. Now Anderson who was an assistant coach at Arkansas before taking the head coaching job at UAB, will get a chance to turn around the SEC school.
Anderson was an assistant coach at Arkansas for 17 seasons, under Nolan Richardson. The Razorbacks enjoyed success during this run. Anderson nearly signed a two-year extension with Missouri, but at the last moment turned it down to become the head-man at Arkansas. Anderson was 111-57 at Missouri in five seasons. Missouri's best finish with Anderson came in 2009, as the Tigers advanced to the Elite 8. Anderson had a record of 89-41 while coaching the UAB Blazers.
Before all of this Anderson was the top assistant for Richardson at Arkansas. The Razorbacks were a hotbed of basketball in the 90's, including three final-four trips, and one national title in 1994. Names like Corliss Willamson, Scotty Thurman, and Corey Beck come to mind from that great team.
Anderson has a wealth of talent to work with at Arkansas. Pelphrey brought in a top-10 recruiting class this season. Will the hiring of a big-name like Anderson keep these recruits of going elsewhere? This will be key for Arkansas's revival in the upcoming seasons.
