A tale of two kicks
January 24th 2012 02:37
As this is supposed to be the year of the quarterback due to all the big numbers put up by star players throughout the league. For college football, it was the year of the kicker. Yesterday, kickers had the spotlight on them in the conference championship games.
For the first game, the spotlight was on New England's Stephen Gostowski and Baltimore's Billy Cundiff. Gostowski nailed three field goals, Cundiff connected on two of three. The lone miss was the deciding factor in the game. Cundiff missed on a 32-yard field goal in the waning moments of the game. Right away, my thoughts turned to Boise State and their huge misses in games last season and the year before. "He pulled a Brotzman." The miss propelled New England to the Super Bowl, winning the AFC title by a score of 23-20.
Kyle Brotzman was the placekicker for Boise State from 2007 to 2010. Brotzman missed a couple of field goals for the Broncos in a loss to Nevada in overtime. This cost the Broncos a chance at a BCS bowl game. Same thing happened this past season for the Broncos. In a game against TCU, Dan Goodale missed a big field goal in the final moments. The rest is history, Boise State lost one game, and just missed a BCS bowl appearance, instead clobbered Arizona State in the MAACO Bowl.
Then in the later game yesterday, New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes and David Akers from San Francisco were in the spotlight as kickers. Both kickers were perfect on the day, as Tynes connected on two field goals and Akers knocked in one. Tynes won the game in overtime for the Giants with a 31-yard field goal. He avoided the infamous Brotzman-like cliche and brought the Giants to the Super Bowl.
Brotzman went un-drafted last season in the NFL Draft. He caught on as a kicker for the Utah Blaze in arena league football. Tynes and Gastowski meet in Indianapolis on Feb. 5th for the Super Bowl.
