A preview of big games this weekend in the big conferences. Will look at smaller conferences as their tournament final games are set.
Duke at North Carolina: The game of the year for the ACC, also known as the "Tobacco Road Rivalry," marks the season finale for these two teams. Both teams are tied for first in the ACC with 13-2 records. Duke has only three losses on the season to Florida State, St. Johns, and Virginia Tech. North Carolina is 23-6 this year after a slow 4-3 start. North Carolina has won 19 out of their last 22 games. Duke won the teams first game, 79-73 thanks to senior guard Nolan Smith's 34 points. Tyler Zeller had a great game as well for the Tar Heels going for 24 points and 13 rebounds. Duke has nobody who can compete with Zeller. The key to this game is the matchup of small forwards and Kyle Singler versus Harrison Barnes. Singler of Duke needs have a better game then the earlier contest. Singler went 3-17 showing the significance of Smith's performance. North Carolina will be difficult to defeat here, Duke's seniors need to have a big game.
Notre Dame at Connecticut/ Pittsburgh at Villanova: Two big games in the Big East with seeding implications on the line for the upcoming conference tournament. Pittsburgh needs the win over Villanova to garner that top spot and win the regular season title. Notre Dame is right with Pittsburgh and if they can defeat Connecticut and the Panthers lose then a tiebreaker would ensue. Notre Dame on the basis of beating Pittsburgh, 56-51 this season would grab the title. The Fighting Irish beat Connecticut earlier this year, 73-70. Connecticut and Villanova are tied for seventh in the conference with Marquette having identical 9-8 records. Both road teams win these games.
Florida at Vanderbilt: Big SEC conference game. Florida with a victory will win the conference. Even with a loss they can win, but Alabama is right with them on the opposite side of the conference. Vanderbilt is 9-6 in conference play knotted up with Georgia and Kentucky, who just beat the Commodores. Kentucky travels to Knoxville to play Tennessee on Saturday. Georgia travels to Alabama. Florida beat Vanderbilt in the teams earlier meeting, 65-61 in overtime. John Jenkins and Kenny Boynton dueled it out with Florida's guard winning the battle. Jenkins and Vanderbilt win this time in a game of two very evenly matched teams.
Oregon at Arizona: A big weekend is ahead in the PAC-10. UCLA and Arizona are tied for first with the Wildcats getting having the easier games ahead. Arizona hosts the Oregon schools while UCLA travels to play the Washington colleges. Arizona will win both games, while the Bruins lose tonight with Washington but win Saturday with the Washington State. Arizona beat Oregon, 76-57 earlier this year in Eugene. This game Saturday will not even be that close as the Wildcats cruise to the PAC-10 title.
