A look back in history: Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points
July 13th 2011 01:39
Former NBA Hall-of-Famer Wilt Chamberlain is widely remembered for his scoring of 100 points. The game took place on March 2, 1962 as Chamberlain was just 26 years old, suited up for the Philadelphia Warriors. The opponent today was the New York Knicks. Philadelphia won the game, 169-147 thanks in large part to Chamberlain's outburst.
Chamberlain during 1962 had been on a tear, already scoring 78 points in a triple-overtime game versus the Los Angeles Lakers. Big things were expected of the big 7 ft. 1 in. center. Chamberlain and the Warriors jumped on the Knicks right away, scoring 13 of the Warriors first 19 points. He scored 23 points in the first quarter for Philadelphia. The Warriors held a 16 point lead at the end of the quarter.
The big man continued the scoring spree in the second quarter. He added another 18 points to the total, surpassing 40 points at halftime. At the time, nobody thought anything out of the ordinary was happening, as Chamberlain has already scored 60 or more points 15 times in his career. Wilt quietly added another 28 points in the third quarter, making his total 69 heading into the fourth. Four minutes later, Chamberlain scored his 79th point, eclipsing his total versus the Lakers. Fans began chanting for the Warriors to give the ball to Wilt. New York started fouling the Warriors, attempting to prevent Chamberlain's feat from happening. He reached 94 points as the clock read less then three minutes remaining. Then in the final minute, with four Knicks guarding him, Chamberlain somehow found his way to the net, grabbing a lob and dunking it.
Chamberlain set NBA records for how many shots he attempted (63) and shots made (36). At the time he set records for free throws made (28) and points in a quarter (31) and half (59). The halftime mark still stands, as do the shots attempted and made. Carmelo Anthony, David Thompson and George Gervin each surpassed the 31 points in a quarter, and Adrian Dantley tied Chamberlain's mark of 28 free throws. Nobody will ever touch the 100 points Chamberlain scored in this game however. Kobe Bryant reached 78 points, and Michael Jordan touched 69, but 100 points is untouchable.
