A look back at the Bowl Season

January 11th 2011 23:55
Now that College Football's national championship is over, and we have 223 days until the season begins, I will look at the bests and worsts of the great season.

Best Individual Performance BCS Game: Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Luck picked apart the Virginia Tech's vaunted defense en route to leading the Cardnial to a 40-12 victory in the Orange Bowl. Luck threw for four touchdowns, and 287 yards on the game. Runner up: Auburn lineman Nick Farley is a close second for his domination of Oregon in the title game.

Worst Individual Performance BCS Game: Connecticut quarterback Zach Fraser. Going into the Fiesta Bowl, Connecticut was expected to get trounced by Oklahoma but Fraser didn't help the cause any, going for 19-39 passing and two interceptions. Runner up: Oregon running back LaMichael James. Tons was expected of Oregon's great rushing attack last night. But Auburn kept James and company in check for the game, holding James to just 49 yards on 13 carries.

Best BCS Game: Rose Bowl. Wisconsin and TCU played a classic game on New Years Day. TCU won 21-19, but the outcome was in doubt right until the end. Most of the scoring took place in the first quarter, with TCU up 14-10. After that the game was a battle of field position and great defense. TCU finished second in the polls behind Auburn, and one might wonder who would win a plus-one game if the two teams faced off. Runner up: Oregon versus Auburn. A great game with the two best teams in the country, with a last second field goal providing the outcome.

Worst BCS Game: Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma roughed up the Huskies from Connecticut, 48-20. This game was expected to be a blowout, and lived up. Right after the game Connecticut coach Randy Edsall jumped to Maryland as the new coach. Runner up: None. The rest of the games were perfect.

Best Non-BCS Performance: This one is difficult, there were great performances all around. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore: Moore was nearly flawless in leading the Broncos to a 26-3 victory of Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. Moore completed 28 of 38 passes for 339 yards, and two touchdowns. Runner up: Troy quarterback Craig Robinson: Robinson led Troy to an easy victory over Ohio in the New Orleans Bowl. Robinson completed 32 of 42 passes for 382 yards and four touchdowns in the 48-21 rout.

Worst Non-BCS Performance: Another tough one. Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz: The Hawaii Bowl saw Tulsa whip Hawaii, 62-35. Moniz coming into the game as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the country, threw for three touchdowns. The downer, four interceptions, two of which were returned for Tulsa touchdowns in the second quarter of the game. Runner up: Nebraska running back Roy Helu Jr. Nebraska heavily favored to win the Holiday Bowl, lost 19-7 to Washington. Helu, expected to gain serious yards only went for 34. He rushed for 110 earlier this season in a 56-21 victory over the Washington.

Best Non-BCS Game: Some great games littered the schedule. Pinstripe Bowl: Syracuse and Kansas State, went back and forth in the first great game of the season. Syracuse won 36-34, but the game went down to a missed two-point conversion from the Wildcats in the final moments. Lots of scoring with neither team accepting defeat. Runner up: Music City Bowl North Carolina versus Tennessee. The lone overtime game of the season, saw the Tar Heels win 30-27 in two overtimes. A field goal with no time on the clock by North Carolina kicker Casey Barth pushed the game to extra time with the score knotted at 20.

Worst Non-BCS Game: Many games turned into one-sided affairs. Citrus Bowl: Michigan State versus Alabama. The Crimson Tide won 49-7. A game many expected to be the best non-BCS game turned into the worst. Alabama crushed the Spartans right from the beginning, turning the game into a laugher. Runner up: Gator Bowl. Michigan versus Mississippi State. Another game with a Big-10 school being outmatched. Michigan lost 52-14, and have since fired coach Rich Rodrieguz and signed Brady Hoke to take the job. Mississippi State took control in the second quarter and never let up on a weak Wolverines defense.

Good picks. The Alabama game was over before it started.
